Altice 2020 United States
Election Coverage

The 2020 election cycle was a monumental moment for Cheddar & Altice News USA, representing the first major production of its scale in the company's history. With a simulcast across 13 channels, diverse web and social experiences, and numerous editorial departments working both on-site and in-studio across the nation, covering the election minute by minute was no easy feat.

As the lead designer for this historic event, I had the privilege of spearheading the visual design and development of tools for our election data. Working in partnership with the Associated Press, we delivered live and historical polling data minute by minute to our audiences.

My responsibilities included:
  • Strategizing with editorial teams to develop a comprehensive CMS that facilitated the live viewing and exporting of data and content. This system empowered our editorial teams to formulate stories and coverage in real-time.
  • Creating seamless data integration for our live experience, designing and engineering lower third and full-scale graphics systems to display data. These systems delivered a sophisticated and visually appealing representation of data to our audiences.
  • Designing and implementing a suite of templates and content tools that allowed production and social teams to quickly and easily create content in tandem with our live broadcast. This approach ensured that our visual assets were cohesive, polished, and delivered on-brand messaging across all platforms.

Build Philosophy

In contrast other business focused networks Cheddar utilizes a simpler implementation of on-air graphics. The philosophy of the on-air graphics system relies on the strength of its hosts and guests, and the contextual lower third, with invader graphics being kept to a minimum or being cut away fullscreens instead. This allows the relatively smaller news teams to better adapt to changing circumstances.
After greybox testing, the most versatile placement ended up being somewhere in the lower itself. Not requiring the stock ticker during election night and subsequent political shows, I merged the ticker and lower third spaces, creating a responsive block where in we could drop in any number of data graphics, without sacrificing the editorial usage of contextual headlines, or taking up valuable screenspace.
